Why sail the Balearics

Four islands, close together, each with its own character. Mallorca gives you the tramuntana mountains dropping into deep-blue coves on the north-west coast, and a string of easy anchorages along the south. Ibiza and Formentera sit a day's sail south-west — clear water over sand that turns the surface a flat turquoise you'll recognise from every postcard, only warmer than it looks. Menorca, quieter and further north-east, keeps the crowds off. Distances are short. You can cover real ground in a week without long overnight passages, and you're rarely more than a couple of hours from a harbour with fuel, water and a decent lunch.

Balearic Islands questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in the Balearics cost?
A week's bareboat runs from the low thousands of euros for a smaller monohull in the shoulder season, rising sharply for a large catamaran in August. On top of the base fee, budget for fuel, an end clean and any marina nights — anchoring in coves is free, berths alongside are not. A day skipper is extra. For a firm figure on a specific boat and week, ask on WhatsApp.
Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in the Balearics?
For bareboat, yes — you'll need a recognised sailing qualification (an ICC or national equivalent) and usually a VHF certificate, plus some logged experience. Spanish waters can also require a crew member with basic radio competence. If you don't hold the paper, book a crewed boat or hire a skipper by the day and let someone else run the yacht while you sail.
When is the best time to sail the Balearics?
June and September are the pick: warm water, settled weather and fewer boats than the August peak. July and August are hot and crowded — the best coves fill by mid-morning, so anchor early. May and October are cooler and cheaper but weather is less reliable. Avoid the north-west coast of Mallorca when the tramuntana is forecast to blow hard.
Where should I start my charter — Mallorca or Ibiza?
Start in Palma de Mallorca for the classic loop: south-coast coves, the run west to Andratx, then the crossing to Ibiza and Formentera. Start in Ibiza if you mainly want the turquoise Formentera anchorages and Ibiza town, with less sailing to get there. Both islands have airports within 15 minutes of the marinas, so pick by where you want to spend your week.
Is the Balearics good for families and first-time charterers?
Yes. Distances are short, the summer wind is usually a gentle afternoon sea breeze, and the anchorages have sheltered, shallow, clear water for swimming. You're rarely far from a harbour with fuel and a lunch stop, so there's no need for long passages. Catamarans give more space and stability for children. If nobody aboard holds a licence, book crewed or hire a day skipper.
Can I sail from Mallorca to Ibiza and Formentera in a week?
Comfortably. The crossing from south-west Mallorca to Ibiza is a day sail in settled weather, and Formentera is a short hop beyond. A typical week takes in Mallorca's south coast, the crossing, a night or two around Ibiza and Formentera, then the return. If you'd rather not commit to the open-water leg, a Mallorca-only week gives you shorter, easier days.
Do I need to book anchorages or moorings in advance?
Coves are first-come in most places, so arrive early in high season. Formentera's Ses Illetes is different — anchoring over the protected seagrass is regulated, so you pick up a mooring buoy in the marked field instead. Marina berths in Ibiza and Palma should be booked ahead in July and August. We'll brief you on the current rules for your route before you leave the dock.
How many yachts can I charter in Balearic Islands?
Right now there are 126 active yachts in Balearic Islands, based out of Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Mallorca, Arenal/Playa de Palma and Marina Port Ibiza. The fleet list above is live from our operator system.
Bareboat or crewed in Balearic Islands?
