Who it suits

Crewed — full service, fully hands-off.

A captain at the helm, a hostess in the galley. You don't make beds, don't cook, don't plot routes. The week comes set up — you just live in it.

Skill level

No experience

Licence

No licence required

Crew provided — captain, hostess (often a chef), occasional second crew on bigger boats.

Best for

  • Families with young kids — crew handles meals + cleanup
  • Special occasions: birthdays, honeymoons, milestones
  • Groups where no one wants to "host"
  • Travellers who came for the destination, not the sailing

Crewed

What's in the price — and what isn't.

Most crewed charters include captain + hostess. Provisioning is usually quoted separately so you stay in control of the food budget.

What's in the price

  • The yacht for the booked week

  • Professional captain

  • Hostess (often a chef)

  • Full insurance

  • Daily cabin service + bed-making

  • Standard breakfast service

  • Dinghy + outboard + water toys (varies)

  • Final cleaning

Pay on top

  • Provisioning

APA — 30% of charter fee, paid upfront, settled at end of week.

  • Fuel + water + dockage

    Drawn from the APA.

  • Marina + mooring

    Drawn from the APA.

  • Tourist tax + landing fees

  • Crew gratuity

5-15% of the charter fee, end of week.

  • Special wines, premium liquor

Standard wines + beer included; specific bottles charged.

APA model is universal for crewed charters. Plan around charter fee + APA + tip — three numbers, no surprises.

About APA

Advance Provisioning Allowance — what it is and how it works.

You wire 30% of the charter fee to the operator before the trip. They pre-buy food, drinks, fuel, marina fees and running costs. At the end of the week the captain presents a full reconciliation — unspent balance refunded, over-run topped up.

Decide between

Crewed or skippered?

Same captain on both — the difference is whether you also get a hostess.

Skippered

Captain drives. You provision + cook + clean.

  • Captain only — no hostess
  • You buy + cook your own food
  • You make beds, do dishes
  • Lower week-rate than crewed
  • Most flexible — bring your own provisioning style

Best for Sailors who like the helm-free but don't need the catering.

Crewed

Captain + hostess. Catered, cleaned, polished.

  • Captain + hostess (sometimes a chef)
  • Breakfast + dinner cooked on board, lunch ashore typically
  • Beds made, cabins serviced daily
  • APA model — pre-funded running costs
  • Closest to a yacht-hotel experience

Best for Families, special occasions, anyone who wants to step on board and stop thinking.

Crewed questions

Asked and answered.

What does the hostess do?
Plans meals (from your preferences), provisions ashore with the captain, cooks 1-2 meals/day, makes beds, services cabins, cleans the saloon. Bigger boats have dedicated chef + separate hostess.
Can we have specific food preferences?
Yes — vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, allergies, kid-friendly: tell us when you book. Last-minute requests are easy too.
How much do we tip?
5-15% of charter fee, end of week, in cash. The captain typically distributes.
Can we drink the bar dry?
Within reason. Standard wine + beer comes with the trip; for top-shelf gin or specific Burgundy, factor it into the APA.
Is the crew always around?
They give you privacy. Captain on watch at the helm, hostess in the galley or her cabin. You get the cockpit and deck to yourselves outside of meals.
