Why sail the Balearics

Four islands, close enough to hop between in a week, different enough that each feels like its own trip. Mallorca's north coast runs under the Tramuntana range — limestone cliffs dropping straight into deep water, anchorages like Cala Sant Vicenç where the water reads turquoise over sand and ink-blue over weed. Ibiza and Formentera are flatter, sandier, busier in season. Menorca is quieter and trickier, with calas you earn. We've sailed these waters most summers, and the short answer is: it suits people who want reliable wind, warm water, and a marina or anchorage within a few hours of wherever they are.

The honest counterpoint: July and August are crowded, and the popular anchorages off Formentera fill by mid-morning. Plan around that and the islands deliver.

Balearic Islands questions

Asked and answered.

What does a Balearic yacht charter cost?
It depends on boat size, age and season. A 40–45ft monohull is cheapest in June or September and dearest in August; catamarans cost more than monohulls of the same length. On top of the boat, budget for fuel, marina berths (Ibiza is the priciest), the end-of-charter clean, provisioning and a refundable deposit. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates for a firm quote.
Do I need a licence to charter bareboat?
Yes. To take a bareboat charter in the Balearics you need a recognised sailing qualification and, usually, a VHF radio certificate, plus honest sea miles — bases do check. If you don't hold the right ticket or want to relax, take a skippered charter and a local captain handles the boat. Send your certificates over WhatsApp and we'll confirm they're accepted.
When is the best time to sail the Balearics?
June and September. The water sits around 22–24°C, the weather is settled, and the anchorages are far less crowded than peak summer. July and August are hot, busy and bring a reliable afternoon sea breeze, but the popular calas off Formentera fill by mid-morning. May and October are quieter and cheaper, with more chance of a strong northerly Tramuntana.
Where should I start — Mallorca or Ibiza?
Most of our fleet is on Mallorca, with bases at Palma, Andratx, Pollença, Cala d'Or and Porto Colom — the widest choice and easiest flights. Start at Palma for the south and east calas, or Pollença for the wild north and a Menorca crossing. Ibiza bases at Marina Port Ibiza and Sant Antoni suit the short, clear-water Ibiza–Formentera triangle. Tell us your party and we'll advise.
Is the Balearics good for families?
Yes. The legs between anchorages are short, the water is warm and clear, and there's a sheltered cala or marina within a few hours of wherever you are. Catamarans give kids deck space and anchor in shallower water off Formentera's beaches. A skipper takes the navigation pressure off so parents can enjoy the trip. June and September keep crowds and heat manageable.
Can I sail between the islands in a week?
Some of it. Mallorca's own coast easily fills a week of short hops. Mallorca to Ibiza is roughly 55–70 nautical miles of open water — a committed full-day sail you plan around the forecast, not a casual hop. The north coast to Menorca's Ciutadella is shorter but exposed to the Tramuntana. Pick one crossing, not two, and keep days in hand for weather.
Can we visit Cabrera and the marine reserves?
Yes, but Cabrera national park needs a mooring permit arranged in advance, and the number of boats allowed is limited — book early. Other marine reserves around the islands have their own anchoring rules. We can point you to the permit process before you sail. Sort it ahead over WhatsApp; turning up without a Cabrera booking in season usually means you don't get in.
How many yachts can I charter in Balearic Islands?
