Power catamarans

Why charter a power cat?

A power cat covers ground a sailing yacht can't — 12-18 knots cruise versus 6-8 under sail. Same deck space and cabin layout as a sailing cat, no rig to handle. Less romance, more itinerary flexibility — perfect for crews who want range over romance.

A power cat covers ground a sailing yacht can't. Same deck space as a sailing cat, no rig to handle. Higher fuel cost (~€1,000-€2,500/week) but bigger itineraries possible (BVI, Greek Cyclades).

Decide between

Power cat or sailing cat?

Same shape, different drive train.

Sailing catamaran

Sails up. Engine assists. 6-8 knots cruise.

  • Lower fuel cost
  • Quieter under sail
  • Sailing IS the experience
  • 6-8 knots cruise
  • Carbon footprint half a power cat

Best for Crews who came to sail, not to motor.

Power cat questions

Asked and answered.

How much fuel does a power cat burn?
At 18 kts cruise: ~80-120 L/h. At 10 kts displacement: ~25-40 L/h. Budget €1,000-€2,500 for a week depending on how fast you push.
Do I need a licence for a power cat?
Yes — same Mediterranean charter licence (ICC + VHF). Some operators ask for prior power-boat handling; we flag any operator-specific rules.
Are power cats noisier than sailing cats?
Under engine, yes — but at displacement speed (8-10 kts) the diesels are quiet. At cruise (15+ kts) you'll hear them in the cabins.
Can I take a power cat across the Atlantic?
Most charter power cats have 350-700 nm range — not transatlantic. They're cruising boats for the Med, Caribbean and SE Asia, not bluewater.
