Why sail France

France gives you three sailing countries in one passport stamp. The Côte d'Azur is the one everyone pictures — pine-backed calanques, harbour towns that still smell of pastis and diesel, superyachts wedged between day-boats. Corsica sits an overnight sail east of it and feels like a different sea: granite cliffs dropping straight into water so clear you can count the anchor chain links. Then there's the Atlantic coast around La Rochelle, tidal, oyster-farmed, and sailed by people who'd rather read a current table than chase a tan. We'd sail all three for different reasons and never confuse one for another.

Visa & entry requirements

France is in the EU and the Schengen Area. EU/EEA citizens enter with a national ID card or passport. UK, US, Canadian, Australian and many other passport holders get up to 90 visa-free days in any 180-day period — counted across the whole Schengen Area, not per country; other nationalities need a Schengen visa in advance. Non-EU passports must have been issued within the last ten years and remain valid for at least three months after you leave.

Since 10 April 2026 the EU Entry/Exit System (EES) has been fully operational: instead of a passport stamp, your first crossing registers fingerprints and a photo, kept on file for three years — allow extra time at the border. ETIAS, the EU's planned pre-travel authorisation, is not yet in force and currently has no confirmed start date. Check your own government's advice before you fly — rules change.

Getting there

Three mainland airports cover the coast. Nice Cote d'Azur (NCE), France's third-busiest and the principal arrival point for the Riviera, sits 6km from the city and runs year-round schedules across Europe — the natural gateway for bases from Antibes round to Saint-Tropez. Marseille Provence (MRS), the fifth-busiest, serves Marseille and the Calanques side, with year-round links to the major hubs and a wide seasonal fan in summer. Toulon-Hyeres (TLN) lands 3km from Hyeres — closest to the Porquerolles and Port-Cros cruising area — with year-round Paris flights and mostly seasonal everything else.

Corsica has four airports: Ajaccio (AJA), Bastia (BIA), Figari (FSC) in the far south and Calvi (CLY). Air Corsica and Air France fly year-round; the low-cost carriers mostly operate June to September, and ferries from Marseille, Toulon and Nice take six to eight hours. Outside the season coastal schedules thin, so check routings for early- and late-season charters.

Time zone & daylight saving

France runs on Central European Time (CET, UTC+1) and switches to Central European Summer Time (CEST, UTC+2) with the rest of the EU — clocks go forward on the last Sunday of March and back on the last Sunday of October; in 2026 that means 29 March and 25 October. The IANA zone is Europe/Paris, and Corsica keeps mainland time.

Practically: the whole French Mediterranean shares one clock with Italy, Spain and Germany, sits one hour ahead of the UK and Ireland, and six hours ahead of US Eastern in summer. A charter week almost never crosses a clock change — only late-October departures catch the switch.
