Why sail Corsica

Corsica is granite, not limestone. Red cliffs at Bonifacio, the Sanguinaires turning copper at sunset off Ajaccio, water that runs from jade over sand to deep blue where the shelf drops. The island sits high and rugged out of the Tyrrhenian, so you get a real coast — genuine anchorages, working fishing quays, a few marinas that fill fast in August and long stretches where you can drop the hook alone.

We've sailed the south of the island most summers and keep coming back for the run down to the Lavezzi and Cavallo, a scatter of low granite islets in the Strait of Bonifacio. It's short-hop cruising with proper character: mornings in a cove, an afternoon reach, a konoba-style quayside dinner of chestnut and charcuterie. Right for couples and families who want warm-water anchorages and short passages; less right for anyone chasing long offshore miles.

Corsica questions

Asked and answered.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht in Corsica?
It depends on the boat, its size and the week. Low-season monohull weeks start well below peak; August is dearest, and catamarans carry a premium over comparable monohulls. On top of the base fee, budget for fuel, end-clean, a refundable security deposit, tourist tax and marina fees when you berth. Send us your dates on WhatsApp and we'll quote real prices rather than an estimate.
Do I need a licence to charter bareboat in Corsica?
Yes. For a bareboat charter the skipper needs a recognised sailing qualification (an ICC or equivalent national certificate) and usually a VHF radio operator's certificate. Some bases also want a short sailing CV showing recent experience. If you don't hold a licence or want a hand for the Strait of Bonifacio, hire a skipper — for the week or just a few days. Tell us your paperwork and we'll confirm what's accepted.
When is the best time to sail Corsica?
June and September. The water's warm, the weather's settled and the anchorages are far quieter than midsummer. July and August bring the hottest weather and the busiest coves — marinas book out and popular bays fill by mid-afternoon. May and October sail well too but the sea is cooler and some quayside places have yet to open or have closed for the season.
Where should I start my Corsica charter?
Ajaccio is the practical base for the west coast — two marinas, easy airport access and a sheltered gulf for a first day. Bonifacio in the south puts you closest to the best cruising: the Lavezzi islands and the crossing to Sardinia. If you want the south from the off, fly into Figari and start from Bonifacio or nearby Pianottoli. We'll match the base to your airport.
Is Corsica good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes, particularly the south-east. Rondinara, Santa Giulia and the beaches near Porto-Vecchio give sandy anchorages, easy holding and short passages between stops. A catamaran suits families for its deck space, shallow draft and steadier nights at anchor. Keep an eye on the mistral, which can blow hard through the Strait, and plan the exposed west-coast legs for settled days.
How windy is the Strait of Bonifacio?
It can be lively. The mistral, a north-westerly, funnels through the Strait and builds a short steep sea between Corsica and Sardinia, sometimes for a day or three. In settled summer weather you often get a gentle afternoon thermal instead. Always check the forecast before crossing to the Lavezzi or Sardinia, and be ready to sit tight in Bonifacio if it's blowing — the harbour is completely sheltered.
Can I sail one-way or across to Sardinia?
Both are possible. Some bases allow a one-way drop between Ajaccio, Bonifacio and Porto-Vecchio for a fee — useful if you'd rather not double back. Sardinia and the Maddalena archipelago are only seven miles south across the Strait and make a fine day's cruising, though you stay inside the EU. Tell us what you have in mind on WhatsApp and we'll confirm which boats and bases allow it.
How many yachts can I charter in Corsica?
Right now there are 34 active yachts in Corsica, based out of Corsica, Ajaccio, Port De Plaisance Charles Ornano, Corsica, Bonifacio, Corsica, Ajaccio, Port Tino Rossi and Corsica, Pianottoli. The fleet list above is live from our operator system.
Bareboat or crewed in Corsica?
33 of the boats here are bareboat, 1 come crewed. Tell us your experience level and we'll match you.
