Germany doesn't get talked about as a charter country the way Croatia or Greece does, and that's part of the appeal. The Baltic coast gives you sheltered fjords, fishing towns and next to no tide, while Brandenburg's lake country puts you on flat water within an hour of Berlin. It's a place to learn, to bring kids, or to string together short hops without ever facing open ocean — right up until you choose to.

Schleswig-Holstein covers the western Baltic: Kiel Fjord, Eckernförde Bay, the long inland fjord of the Schlei running to Schleswig, and Flensburg Fjord on the Danish border. Mecklenburg picks up east of Wismar — Rostock and Warnemünde, the Strelasund at Stralsund, and the shallow, reed-fringed Bodden lagoons behind Rügen and Hiddensee. Brandenburg is inland: the Havel chain of lakes through Potsdam and west Berlin, plus smaller lakes like the Scharmützelsee, linked by canal and lock rather than open water.

The sailing season runs May to September, with shoulder weeks into October on the coast. Winds on the Baltic are mostly westerly, force 3 to 5, with occasional stronger blows through the fjords — steady enough for good sailing, rarely extreme. There's almost no tide, which makes pilotage forgiving. On the Brandenburg lakes, wind is lighter and more variable, and conditions stay flat even when the coast is blowing.

Bareboat charter is available across all three areas for guests holding a recognised sailing licence — coastal (SBF See or equivalent) for the Baltic, inland (SBF Binnen) for the lakes. Skippered charter suits anyone without a licence, or who'd rather let someone else read the Bodden's shallow patches. Day charter and shorter breaks are common on the lakes; week-long itineraries are the norm on the coast.

Bareboat weeks on the Baltic typically run from the low thousands of euros up to considerably more for larger or newer yachts in high season (July–August); lake boats in Brandenburg tend to sit at the lower end of that range. A typical Schleswig-Holstein route: Day 1, leave Kiel and cross to Eckernförde. Day 2, round into the Schlei and anchor off Kappeln. Day 3, sail the inlet itself, stopping at Arnis. Day 4, back out to sea and north toward Flensburg Fjord. Day 5, Flensburg, with a short crossing to the Danish side if conditions allow. Day 6, south again to Eckernförde. Day 7, return to Kiel. Mecklenburg and Brandenburg both support similar week-long loops built around their own harbours and lakes.

Hamburg airport is the usual gateway for Schleswig-Holstein bases (Kiel is under an hour by car); Rostock–Laage or Berlin airports serve Mecklenburg and Brandenburg respectively. Marina check-in is typically Saturday afternoon, with a briefing before you leave the berth. Supermarkets near most marinas cover provisioning; larger bases also have chandleries for last-minute gear.
