Why sail Spain

Spain gives you two very different sailing worlds inside one country. The Balearic Islands sit in warm, clear Mediterranean water with short hops between anchorages and a busy but manageable summer scene. The Canaries, out in the Atlantic off Africa, are for people who want swell, trade winds, and a longer sailing day. Between them sit Catalonia's Costa Brava and the flatter Alicante coast. We keep coming back for the water colour off Menorca and the calas you can only reach by boat.

What makes Spain work as a charter ground is the density. In the Balearics you're rarely more than 20 miles from the next anchorage, so you sail in the morning, swim by lunch, and pick a harbour before the afternoon breeze fills in. It suits people who want to actually sail without committing to long passages.

Spain questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in Spain cost?
It depends on boat size, age, season and area. A bareboat monohull runs from the low thousands of EUR per week in shoulder season and climbs steeply in August. Catamarans cost more. Add fuel, cleaning, berthing and a skipper (roughly 150-200 EUR per day) if you take one. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates for a firm quote rather than a guess.
Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in Spain?
For bareboat you need a recognised sailing licence, and Spanish waters expect at least one crew member to hold a VHF radio certificate. Carry the originals, not photos. If you don't hold the right ticket, or you'd rather have local knowledge for the calas and Cabrera's permit system, take a skippered charter — we can arrange one across all our sailing areas.
When is the best time to sail in Spain?
In the Balearics, June and September are the sweet spot — warm water, reliable afternoon sea breezes and fewer boats than August. July and August are hot and busy, with anchorages filling by early afternoon. The Canaries are different: the north-east trades and Atlantic swell make them a genuine winter option, sailing well when the Mediterranean turns cold and grey.
Where should I start my charter in Spain?
Palma de Mallorca is the main base, with direct European flights and marinas a short transfer away. Menorca and Ibiza have their own airports and starting points. On the mainland, charters run from near Barcelona and the Costa Brava, and from Alicante on the Costa Blanca. In the Atlantic, the Canaries start from Lanzarote, Gran Canaria or Tenerife.
Is Spain good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes. The Balearics are ideal for families — short hops between anchorages, warm clear water for swimming, and a next harbour rarely more than 20 miles away. Catamarans are popular for the deck space and shallow draft into the calas. June and September avoid the worst of the August heat and crowds. A skipper takes the pressure off if it's your first family charter.
What are the winds like sailing the Balearics?
The typical summer pattern is a sea breeze that builds through the afternoon, often 10-18 knots, then dies overnight. Mornings are usually calm. Watch for the tramontana, a northerly that can pipe up hard between Menorca and the mainland. Check the forecast every morning and plan your longer legs early. Spring and autumn bring more variable conditions and the odd passing low.
Can I visit Cabrera on a charter?
Yes, but plan ahead. Cabrera, south of Mallorca, is a protected national park with a limited mooring-permit system — you book a buoy in advance and numbers are capped. It's worth the effort for the quiet and the water. A skipper handles the permit and the details; if you're going bareboat, sort the booking well before you sail. Ask us on WhatsApp.
