Why sail Sicily

Sicily gives you two sailing trips in one. North of the island sit the Aeolian Islands — seven volcanic cones rising straight out of deep blue water, Stromboli still puffing at night. South and east you get baroque harbour towns, Greek temples within sight of the quay, and quieter anchorages where you might be the only boat. The water is clear, the swimming stops are frequent, and the food ashore is reason enough to come. We base 150 yachts here, so you can pick a start point near the cruising ground you actually want rather than motoring two days to reach it.

It suits a wide range of sailors. First charterers do fine on the sheltered legs between Milazzo and the nearer Aeolians; more experienced crews push out to Stromboli and Panarea or down the east coast to Siracusa. It is less right for anyone wanting flat calm every day — the volcanic islands sit in open water and the swell finds you.

Sicily questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in Sicily cost?
It depends on the boat and the week. Bareboat monohulls are cheapest in May, June and October and peak in August; catamarans cost more for the same length; crewed yachts are quoted per boat plus crew and provisioning. On top of the base price, budget for fuel, the end clean, away-from-base marina fees, tourist tax and a refundable deposit. Send us your dates and crew size on WhatsApp for a real quote.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat in Sicily?
Yes. For a bareboat you'll need a recognised sailing qualification (such as an ICC or RYA Day Skipper, or your national equivalent) and usually a VHF certificate, plus genuine experience for the open-water legs out to the Aeolians. Italian charter paperwork can be particular, so we confirm exactly what your nominated skipper needs before you book. No licence? Add a professional skipper to any bareboat for the week.
When is the best time to sail Sicily?
June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, settled weather and fewer boats than peak. July and August bring the hottest weather, the busiest anchorages and the highest prices, so book early. May and October are quieter and cheaper but the sea is cooler and weather less reliable. The season runs roughly May to October; outside that, most of the fleet is laid up.
Where should I start a charter in Sicily?
For the Aeolian Islands, start at Portorosa, Capo d'Orlando or Milazzo on the north coast — Vulcano is about 15nm offshore. For the Egadi Islands and quieter western anchorages, start at Trapani, Marsala or San Vito Lo Capo. For baroque harbour towns and Greek sites, run the east coast from Riposto, Augusta or Siracusa. Pick your base to match the cruising ground so you don't waste days motoring.
Is Sicily good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes, with the right plan. The sheltered legs between Milazzo and the nearer Aeolians give short hops, frequent swim stops and easy beaches. A crewed yacht or a skippered bareboat takes the navigation and local knowledge off your plate, which suits families and first-timers. Catamarans add deck space and a shallower draught for anchoring close in. Avoid committing to exposed island anchorages if a strong maestrale is forecast.
What are the winds like for sailing the Aeolian Islands?
Summer winds are usually light to moderate, often 8–15 knots, with afternoon sea breezes. The maestrale (north-west wind) can build to 20–30 knots and raise a real sea in the channels between islands and around the western capes. Mornings are frequently calm, so plan longer passages early. The Aeolians sit in open water with limited all-weather shelter — check the forecast before committing to an exposed island overnight.
How do I get to the marinas in Sicily?
Fly into Catania for the east coast and Riposto, Palermo for the north and west bases (Portorosa, Capo d'Orlando, Trapani, Palermo), or Trapani for the western Egadi bases. Airport-to-marina transfers run from about 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the base, so match your flight to your start harbour. Ferries link the mainland and islands if you're combining the charter with land travel.
