Why sail Sardinia

The water in the Maddalena archipelago is the colour people don't believe until they're anchored in it — pale jade over white sand, deepening to ink where the granite drops away. That's the short answer to why you sail here. The longer one: most of north Sardinia's best anchorages are a short hop apart, the granite islands break the swell, and you can spend a week without a long passage if you don't want one. We base most of our fleet in the Gulf of Olbia and around Cannigione, which puts you inside the archipelago within an hour of leaving the dock.

It isn't a secret, and we won't pretend it is. July and August bring crowds, charter traffic and a marine park that fills its mooring fields by mid-morning. Sail the shoulder months and you get the same granite and water with room to breathe.

Sardinia questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in Sardinia cost?
It depends entirely on boat, week and crew. Bareboat monohulls in the shoulder season start in the low-to-mid four figures per week (EUR); peak-August catamarans run well into five figures. On top, budget for the Maddalena park permit, fuel, end cleaning, a security deposit and any premium marina nights. We don't publish fixed figures because they'd mislead — send your dates on WhatsApp for a real quote.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat in Sardinia?
Yes. Italian charters require a recognised sailing licence and recent experience for the named skipper, plus a VHF radio certificate held by someone aboard. There's no single global standard, so we check what you hold against what's accepted here before confirming. If your paperwork doesn't quite fit, hire a skipper for the week or just the first day — both are straightforward to arrange.
When is the best time to sail Sardinia?
May, June and September give the most settled conditions, warm water and room in the anchorages. July and August are hot and reliably sailable but busy — park moorings fill by mid-morning and marinas book out. April and October work for flexible crews who watch the forecast, since the mistral can blow hard in the shoulders. Avoid mid-August if crowds put you off.
Where should I start my charter?
Cannigione is closest to the Maddalena archipelago, which is where most weeks centre. Olbia bases (including Cugnana and Cala dei Sardi) are ten minutes from the airport and still inside the park within an hour. Portisco and Porto Rotondo sit on the Costa Smeralda side. For the quieter south and Villasimius, start from Cagliari. Tell us your route and we'll match a base.
Is Sardinia good for families and first-time charterers?
Very. The Maddalena anchorages are close together, so you avoid long passages, and the sheltered water behind the granite islands is calm in settled weather. Catamarans give space and shallow draught for beach calas. The main caution is the mistral — when it blows you plan around it — which is exactly what a skipper handles if you'd rather not. Plenty of our family weeks never sail more than a couple of hours a day.
What is the Maddalena park permit and do I need one?
The La Maddalena archipelago is a national marine park, and entering it by boat requires a permit — a per-day, per-boat fee that scales with length. Some zones are no-anchor (you take a buoy) and a few beaches, like Budelli, restrict landing to protect them. We arrange the permit as part of your charter so you're legal from day one. Just don't skip it; the park is patrolled.
Can I sail from Sardinia to Corsica?
Yes, weather permitting. The Bonifacio Strait is a day sail across, and Lavezzi, Bonifacio and the southern Corsican coast are popular extensions for confident crews. The catch is the mistral, which funnels through the strait and builds real sea — you cross on a settled forecast, not on a whim. Confirm your boat's cruising area allows it before booking, and keep the crossing flexible within your week.
