Why sail the Sporades

The Sporades are the green corner of the Aegean. Where the Cyclades are bare rock and hard afternoon wind, these islands are pine down to the waterline, the water goes from turquoise to bottle-green over sand, and the distances are short. You can sail Skiathos to Skopelos in a morning, drop the hook in a cove for lunch, and still make a taverna quay by evening.

It suits people who want to actually stop. First-time charterers and families do well here because the legs are forgiving and the anchorages are sheltered. Serious distance sailors after big open passages will find it small — that's the point. We come back for the marine park water and the quiet northern islands, not for mileage.

Skiathos/Sporades, Volos questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in the Sporades cost?
It depends on boat size, age and the week you pick. Shoulder-season monohulls are the affordable end; a newer catamaran in peak August is the top. Rather than quote a number that ages badly, we price your exact dates and boat live — Price on request. Budget extra for fuel, end clean, deposit or waiver, harbour fees and any hired skipper.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat here?
Greece requires the skipper to hold a recognised sailing qualification (such as an ICC or RYA Day Skipper) plus, in most cases, a VHF/radio certificate, and often a second competent crew member. If nobody in your group holds the ticket, we can arrange a skipper for the week or just the first day. Send your certificates over WhatsApp and we'll confirm what's accepted.
When is the best time to sail the Sporades?
June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, steady sailing and thinner crowds. July and August are hottest, busiest and the priciest, with the strongest meltemi spells. May and October are quieter and cheaper but bring more variable weather. Pick shoulder season for the best balance of wind, warmth and space on the town quays.
Where do most charters start — Skiathos or Volos?
Both. Skiathos has its own airport, so flying straight in and starting there is simplest for many crews. Volos is the mainland gateway, reached via Athens by road or by ferry from Skiathos, and gives you the sheltered Pagasetic Gulf for a shakedown first night. Tell us how you're arriving on WhatsApp and we'll set the base that saves you the most hassle.
Is the Sporades good for families and first-time charterers?
Yes — it's one of the friendlier Greek grounds for both. The islands sit close together, so legs are short and you can stop when you like. Anchorages are sheltered, the water is calm and clear for swimming, and the meltemi lands softer here than in the Cyclades. Plan north-going hops for the morning calm and keep the days relaxed.
Can I sail into the Alonissos marine park?
Yes, but with rules. The National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades is the largest protected marine area in Europe. Some zones around the outer islets are restricted or need a permit, and anchoring is regulated to protect the seabed and the monk seals. The boundaries change, so check the current zones before you plan a night out there and anchor only where permitted.
How much sailing experience do the legs demand?
Not a lot. Most passages between Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos are an hour or two, in generally sheltered water. The one thing to respect is the meltemi in a strong July or August spell, which can push force 5-6 through the gaps — go north early while it's calm. Reaching the outer islets is more exposed and best kept for settled days.
How many yachts can I charter in Skiathos/Sporades, Volos?
Right now there are 89 active yachts in Skiathos/Sporades, Volos, based out of Skiathos, Volos and Skopelos. The fleet list above is live from our operator system.
