Why sail the Ionian

The Ionian is the gentle end of Greek sailing. Where the Cyclades hand you the meltemi and 30 nautical mile crossings, here the islands sit close together and the water between them stays flat most mornings. You can sail from a bay you slept in to a taverna quay in time for lunch, and still have the afternoon for a swim.

The islands are green — pine and olive down to the shoreline, not the bare rock of the Aegean. The channels are protected, the anchorages are frequent, and you're rarely more than a couple of hours from shelter. We've sailed here every season for years, and it remains the ground we point first-time charterers and families towards without hesitation.

Ionian Islands questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in the Ionian cost?
Weekly bareboat rates depend on boat size, age and season. Shoulder-season monohulls sit at the lower end; newer catamarans in peak August cost considerably more. On top of the charter fee, budget for fuel (kept low by short hops), a security deposit or damage waiver, end cleaning, and any extras. Ionian marina and mooring fees are modest. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates for a firm price on request.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat in the Ionian?
Yes. For bareboat charter in Greece you need a recognised sailing certification (such as an ICC, RYA Day Skipper or equivalent) plus a competent second crew member, and often a VHF certificate. Requirements vary slightly by boat and base. If you don't hold the qualifications, a skippered or crewed charter is straightforward to arrange. Send us your certificates on WhatsApp and we'll confirm what's needed for your booking.
When is the best time to sail the Ionian?
June and September are the sweet spot — warm water, lighter crowds and reliable afternoon breezes. July and August are hot and busy, with harbours filling early, so tie up by mid-afternoon in peak season. May and October are quieter and cheaper but bring more variable weather. The season runs roughly May to October; outside it, most bases wind down.
Where should I start my Ionian charter?
Lefkas (Lefkada) is the most popular base and the natural starting point for the classic loop — Meganisi, Kalamos, Ithaca and Kefalonia are all short hops away, and it's joined to the mainland by bridge, so no ferry. Corfu and Preveza open up the northern islands towards Paxos, while Kefalonia and Zakynthos suit the lower Ionian. Preveza airport is closest to the Lefkas bases.
Is the Ionian good for families and first-time charterers?
It's the ground we recommend first. The islands sit close together, the channels are sheltered, and the summer maïstro is a moderate afternoon breeze that dies at dusk — predictable and forgiving. Short daily hops mean plenty of swim stops and no long crossings, and there are frequent bays for shelter. Tavernas line most quays, so evenings ashore are easy. Right for families and anyone new to chartering.
What are the winds like in the Ionian?
The Ionian's summer wind is the maïstro, a north-westerly sea breeze that builds through the afternoon to around Force 3 to 5 and drops at dusk. Mornings are typically calm, good for an easy motor or gentle sail to the next bay. This is much milder and more predictable than the Aegean meltemi. Spring and autumn can bring more variable weather and occasional southerlies, so watch the shoulder-season forecast.
How do I get to the Ionian charter bases?
Preveza (Aktio) airport is closest to the Lefkas bases, around 30 to 40 minutes by road. Corfu, Kefalonia and Zakynthos airports serve their own bases directly. Lefkada is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge, so no ferry is needed. Athens involves a long transfer and is best avoided for an Ionian trip. Message us on WhatsApp and we'll help with transfers and timings.
How many yachts can I charter in Ionian Islands?
