Why sail Zadar

Zadar sits where the coast breaks up into a maze of low, pine-fringed islands and the Kornati archipelago opens south. The sailing is protected — you're rarely more than an hour from shelter, and the channels between Ugljan, Pašman and the mainland stay calm when the outer islands catch the wind. That makes this one of the gentler places to learn the Adriatic, without giving up the good stuff: bare stone islets, coves with three boats at anchor, and a working city with a Roman street plan you can walk in an evening.

We've sailed these waters most summers. What keeps us coming back is the density — you can plan a week that never repeats an anchorage, and still cover short legs. The trade-off is honest: July and August are busy, and the popular Kornati bays fill by mid-afternoon. Arrive early or aim for the shoulder months.

Zadar region questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter from Zadar cost?
It depends on the boat, its age and the week. A mid-size bareboat monohull in June or September costs far less than a new catamaran in peak August. On top of the boat, budget for the Kornati park fee, fuel, mooring fees of roughly €40–120 a night, tourist tax and the end-clean. We quote firm figures against your dates — message us on WhatsApp with your crew size and week.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat in Croatia?
Yes. Croatian authorities require a competent skipper aboard holding a recognised sailing certificate — an ICC or national equivalent — plus a VHF radio certificate. Both are checked at handover, so bring the originals. If nobody in your crew holds the tickets, take a skipper. That's a common choice here, and a local skipper's knowledge of which cove holds in the bura is worth the day rate.
When is the best time to sail Zadar?
June and September are the sweet spot: warm water, steady afternoon maestral, and anchorages that aren't jammed. July and August bring reliable breeze but crowds and heat — the popular Kornati bays fill by mid-afternoon, so arrive early. May and October are quieter and cheaper, with a real chance of a cold bura, so pack proper foul-weather gear if you sail the shoulders.
Where do charters start from around Zadar?
Most boats leave from Biograd, Sukošan or Zadar itself. Biograd sits closest to the Kornati and the Pašman channel — the shortest hop to the best sailing. Sukošan, at the large Dalmacija marina, is the biggest base and a short ride from the airport. Marina Zadar and D-Marin Borik put you in the city if you want a night ashore before departure.
Is Zadar a good place to sail with a family or first-timers?
Yes — it's one of the gentler Adriatic areas. The channels around Ugljan and Pašman offer flat water and short legs, so you're rarely far from shelter. Coves are close together, swimming is easy off the stern, and villages like Sali sit on quiet quays. Watch the bura forecast in spring and autumn, and consider a skipper for the first family charter to take the pressure off.
What is the Kornati park fee and do I have to pay it?
Kornati is a national park, so entering its waters carries a daily fee scaled to your boat's length. You pay it if you sail inside the park boundary — which you almost certainly will, since the archipelago is the region's headline sailing. Buy it in advance at the base or online where possible; it's cheaper than paying a ranger on the water. Anchoring is restricted in places, so read the buoyage.
How do I get to Zadar to start my charter?
Zadar has its own airport with seasonal European flights, about twenty minutes from Sukošan and the city. Split airport lies roughly ninety minutes south and is often better connected out of season. From either, a taxi or transfer reaches the bases easily. Handover is usually Saturday afternoon with return by morning, so plan a night aboard at base each end rather than rushing the brief.
