Sail Kvarner.

Kvarner is the wide bay tucked into Croatia's northern Adriatic, ringed by the islands of Krk, Cres, Lošinj and Rab. It sits closer to the alpine mainland than Dalmatia, so the light carries a cooler, clearer edge and the water off Lošinj runs a deep glass-green. This is quieter cruising ground than Split or Dubrovnik. You get short hops between anchorages, town quays that aren't booked solid by noon, and konobas where the grilled scampi came off a boat that morning. Right for first charterers, families, and anyone who wants sailing over marina-hopping and a scene.

Most charters start on Krk, at Marina Punat — one of the oldest and best-run yards on the coast, well sheltered inside its lagoon. From there the natural loop runs south to Rab, west across to Lošinj and Cres, and back up the Krk channel. Rab town is the postcard stop: four bell towers on a spit, a walkable old quarter, a harbour that fills fast in July. Mali Lošinj sits at the head of a long protected inlet and is the busiest port in the group, with fuel, provisioning and a marina. Cres is the wild one — Valun and Lubenice for anchoring, the freshwater lake at Vransko inland, and long stretches of empty coast. On the mainland side, Opatija, Icici and Rijeka give you road and rail access without a long delivery leg.

The sailing window runs May to October. June and September are the sweet spots: warm water, settled weather, harbours you can still get into after 5pm. July and August are hot, busy and pricier, and the quays fill early. The two winds to know are the bura and the maestral. The bura is a cold, gusty northeasterly that falls off the Velebit range — it can arrive hard and fast, especially in the Velebit channel east of Rab, and it's the reason you plan an early start and watch the forecast. The maestral is the friendly one: a thermal northwesterly that builds through the afternoon to 10-18 knots, ideal for a downwind reach. The jugo, a warm southeasterly, brings swell and rain and usually gives a day's notice. None of this is Dalmatian meltemi-scale, but the bura earns respect.

This is bareboat country. The fleet based out of Marina Punat and the surrounding Kvarner ports is almost entirely self-skippered monohulls and catamarans in the 35-50ft range, so you sail your own boat and set your own pace. If you don't hold a licence or want a local hand aboard, we can arrange a skipper for the week, and provisioning or a hostess by request. Longer legs into central Dalmatia are possible one-way but need planning — ask us early. Boats provision and check in at the base; most charters run Saturday to Saturday.

A week's bareboat charter in Kvarner typically runs lower than peak Dalmatia for a comparable boat, partly because the ground is quieter and the deliveries shorter. Expect broad ranges rather than fixed numbers: a mid-size monohull sits in one band, a modern catamaran a good deal higher, and both climb steeply for the July-August peak. On top of base hire, budget for fuel (short hops here keep this modest), a security deposit, tourist tax, final cleaning, and marina or mooring fees at the town quays — Rab and Mali Lošinj charge in season, while anchoring in the Cres bays is free. Day 1 (Sat): Check in at Marina Punat, provision on Krk, overnight in the marina to sort the boat.

Day 2: Short sail south to Rab. Anchor off the Frkanj peninsula for a swim, then take the town quay or a mooring for the evening and walk the four bell towers.

Day 3: Cross to Lošinj. Anchor at Krivica, a deep pine-lined inlet on the east coast, or push on to Mali Lošinj for fuel and dinner ashore.

Day 4: Up the Cres coast to Valun or Lubenice — quiet bays, clear water, a hilltop village worth the climb. Anchor overnight.

Day 5: Sail the Cres channel back toward Krk, stopping at a lunch anchorage. The afternoon maestral usually gives a good reach.

Day 6: A relaxed day around the Krk anchorages — Soline bay or a stop at Vrbnik on the cliff. Position for an easy final morning.

Day 7 (Fri): Back into Marina Punat, refuel, and hand the boat back. Depart Saturday.

Swap the order to suit the wind — with the bura in the forecast you take shelter early and don't fight it.

Kvarner is one of the easier Croatian grounds to reach. Rijeka airport, on Krk itself, is a short transfer from Marina Punat — under half an hour. Pula, Zagreb and Zadar are all within a two to three hour drive if the flights suit better, and the road bridge onto Krk means no ferry to catch. Trains and buses run to Rijeka and Opatija on the mainland. Provisioning is straightforward: supermarkets in Punat and Krk town, a chandlery at the marina, and good ship's stores in Mali Lošinj. Bring layers — mornings on the water here are cooler than Dalmatia even in high summer.
