Why sail from Dubrovnik

Most people fly into Dubrovnik for the old town and never see the water. That's a mistake. An hour north of the walls, past the Ombla river mouth, sits ACI Marina Komolac — the base for nearly all southern Adriatic charters. From here you drop straight into the Elaphiti islands: pine-covered, low-traffic, and close enough that a first-day sail lands you at anchor before dinner.

The southern Adriatic is quieter than the central Kornati crowd and quieter still than Split. Water is clear to 15m in the sheltered channels. The limestone comes down to the sea, harbours are small, and the konoba on the quay usually still cooks what the owner's cousin landed that morning. We've sailed this coast every summer for years — it rewards people who like short hops and long lunches over distance-chasing.

Dubrovnik region questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in Dubrovnik cost?
It depends on the boat, its age and the week. A mid-size bareboat monohull in May or September sits well below a new catamaran in peak August. On top of the base rate, budget for the tourist tax, fuel, final clean, and marina fees away from your home buoy. Send your dates and party size on WhatsApp and we'll quote real boats rather than guess.
Do I need a licence to charter a bareboat?
Yes. To skipper a bareboat in Croatia you need a recognised sailing licence (ICC or an accepted national equivalent) and a VHF radio certificate for at least one person aboard. Bring the originals — Croatian authorities do check. No licence? Take a skipper. We can put one on any bareboat so you keep the freedom without the paperwork.
When is the best time to sail Dubrovnik?
May, June and September. The water is warm enough to swim, the maestral gives reliable afternoon sailing, and the anchorages aren't full. July and August are hot and busy — fine if you sail early and grab buoys before mid-afternoon. April and October are quieter and cheaper but cooler, with more chance of a bura or jugo blowing through.
Where do charters start from?
Almost all boats are based at ACI Marina Komolac, about an hour north of Dubrovnik old town up the Ombla river. A few lie at Dubrovnik Town Port or nearby. We confirm your exact base and check-in time when you book. Fly into Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) and take a taxi or transfer — roughly an hour to Komolac.
Is Dubrovnik good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes, especially the tight Elaphiti–Mljet loop, which keeps sailing legs short and swimming stops frequent. Mljet's salt lakes and the sheltered channels suit kids well. Take a skipper if you'd rather not run the boat yourself. Summer water is warm and the anchorages calm; just watch the sun and provision plenty of shade and snacks for the middle of the day.
How far can I sail in a week from Dubrovnik?
Comfortably out to Lastovo and Korčula and back, or you can stay tight around the Elaphiti and Mljet and barely move. A relaxed week covers 100–150 nautical miles with short daily hops and long lunches. Push west to Vis and you'll spend more time under way. Let the maestral and your crew set the pace rather than a fixed plan.
Do I need to book Mljet buoys and marinas ahead?
In July and August, yes — Mljet's park buoys at Polače and Pomena and the quay at Korčula fill by early afternoon. Arrive early or book ahead where you can. In shoulder season it's far more relaxed and you can usually turn up. Either way, sail in the morning and settle before the maestral peaks; it makes tying up much easier.
