Why sail here

The British Virgin Islands are the closest thing to easy blue-water sailing you'll find. Most days you can see your next anchorage from the one you left. The Sir Francis Drake Channel runs the length of the archipelago, sheltered on both sides by a chain of green hills, so the water stays flat while the trades give you a proper sail. You drop the mooring after breakfast, sail two or three hours, and you're swimming by lunch. That's the pattern for a week, and it's why the BVI has been a first-charter classic for decades. We sail here because it forgives — good holding, marked hazards, help never far off — without being dull.

British Virgin Islands questions

Asked and answered.

Do I need a licence to charter in the BVI?
There's no government-issued licence requirement, but bareboat operators do. To take a boat out yourself you'll need to show a recognised qualification — RYA, ASA or equivalent — plus a sailing CV showing real experience on a boat of similar size. If your experience is light, we'll put a skipper aboard. Message us on WhatsApp with your background and we'll tell you honestly what you can charter.
When is the best time to sail the British Virgin Islands?
December to April is the reliable window: steady 15-20 knot north-east trades, dry weather, warm water. It's also the busiest and priciest. May and June are quieter with softer wind and still fine sailing. July to November is hurricane season, when many boats come off the water. Watch for the winter northerly ground swell, which makes some north-facing anchorages uncomfortable.
How much does a BVI yacht charter cost?
It depends heavily on season and boat. Bareboat monohulls start in the low thousands EUR per week in shoulder season and climb for large catamarans in January. Skippered and crewed charters add crew fees and food. Budget separately for mooring balls, fuel, the park permit, cruising tax and provisioning, which is expensive here. Send us your dates and crew on WhatsApp for a real quote.
Where do most charters start?
Tortola is the hub. Boats turn around at the marinas in Road Town and at Nanny Cay, both a short taxi from the airport at Beef Island or the ferry docks. From there the Drake Channel islands are all within a few hours' sail. You provision at base, take the briefing, and usually sail a short leg to your first anchorage the same afternoon.
Is the BVI good for families and first-time charterers?
It's one of the best places to start. Anchorages are close together and often within sight of each other, the water is flat inside the Drake Channel, hazards are marked, and most nights you're on a mooring ball rather than anchoring. Catamarans give kids room to move and shallow draft for beach anchorages. If nobody aboard wants to skipper, a skippered catamaran solves it.
How do I get to the British Virgin Islands from Europe?
There's no simple direct route. Most fly into St Thomas (STT) and ferry to Tortola, or route via San Juan (SJU) with a connecting flight to Beef Island (EIS). Both add hours and a customs stop, and connections are tight, so build in a night's buffer. Bring your passport, sailing qualifications for the briefing, and reef-safe sunscreen.
Do I have to anchor or can I use mooring balls?
Most popular anchorages in the BVI are organised mooring fields, not free anchoring, and you pay a nightly fee per ball. That's simpler than it sounds — pick up a ball, secure the pennant, done. There's a national park mooring system too, which needs a permit. Free anchoring is possible in some spots but limited; plan your week around the mooring fields.
