Why sail the BVI

The British Virgin Islands are the easiest place we know to learn to sail somewhere warm. The islands ring the Sir Francis Drake Channel, most of them within sight of the next, so you rarely lose the land. The trades are reliable, the water is flat in the lee of the reef, and the passages between anchorages run 5 to 15 nautical miles — an hour or two under sail, not a day. You can be new to this and still feel in control.

That convenience is also the honest caveat: the BVI are busy, and the popular moorings fill by mid-afternoon in season. This isn't wilderness cruising. It's a well-charted, well-served sailing ground where the sailing is genuinely good and the logistics are handled. Right for first bareboat charterers, families, and anyone who wants sun and reliable wind without a passage plan. Less right if you're chasing solitude or serious distance.

British Virgin Islands questions

Asked and answered.

Do I need a licence to charter a yacht in the BVI?
No formal licence is required to bareboat in the British Virgin Islands. You'll fill out a sailing résumé listing your experience, and a briefer will usually run a short dockside check-out before you leave to confirm you're comfortable with the boat. If your experience is limited, we can arrange a professional skipper for part or all of the week.
When is the best time to sail the British Virgin Islands?
December to March gives the most reliable north-east trades, typically 15 to 20 knots, with warm settled weather — it's also the busiest and priciest. April to June is quieter with lighter wind and warmer water. Avoid August to October, the peak of hurricane season, when many charters pause and the risk isn't worth it.
How much does a week's charter cost?
It depends heavily on boat size, age, and season. Bareboat monohulls start in the low thousands of euros per week; modern catamarans run considerably higher, into five figures at peak. Add mooring fees, fuel, provisioning, the national park permit, and any crew. We quote per boat rather than publish one figure — message us on WhatsApp for a firm number.
Where do charters start?
Our bases are on Tortola: Ritter House Marina and Hodge's Creek on the east side, and Nanny Cay Marina on the south coast. All sit within easy reach of Beef Island airport and the Road Town ferry docks. From any of them you're straight out onto the Sir Francis Drake Channel and the main cruising loop.
Is the BVI good for families and first-time charterers?
It's one of the best places to start. Anchorages are 5 to 15 miles apart, most within sight of the next, so passages are short and the reef keeps the water flat. Catamarans give families space and shallow draft. The trades are steady and predictable. Pick up moorings early in the day, as popular spots fill by mid-afternoon in season.
How do I get to Tortola?
Most people fly into St Thomas in the US Virgin Islands and take the ferry to Tortola — several crossings a day and usually the cheapest route. Direct flights into Beef Island via San Juan or Antigua skip the ferry but cost more. Bring your passport; the BVI are a British Overseas Territory with immigration on arrival.
Do I have to anchor, or are there moorings?
Most popular anchorages use mooring balls rather than free anchoring, with a nightly fee paid to the operator or park authority. It keeps things orderly and protects the seabed. Balls go fast in peak season, so plan to arrive by early afternoon at busy stops like the Baths or Norman Island's Bight. Some quieter bays still allow anchoring.
How many yachts can I charter in British Virgin Islands?
Right now there are 174 active yachts in British Virgin Islands, based out of BVI. The fleet list above is live from our operator system.
Bareboat or crewed in British Virgin Islands?
174 of the boats here are bareboat. Tell us your experience level and we'll match you.
