Why sail Mahé

Mahé is the largest and most developed of Seychelles' granite islands, and Eden Island Marina makes it the natural place to start and finish a charter here. Unlike open-water grounds in the Caribbean or the Med, this is short-hop cruising: granite peaks give way to coral outer islands, and most legs between anchorages run two to four hours under sail. The water is clear and deep close to shore, beaches are quiet even in high season, and the granite boulders that shape the coastline — smoothed by millions of years of weather — give every anchorage its own character. Nothing here feels crowded.

Top things to do

Ste Anne Marine National Park — snorkel the reef off Moyenne and Round Island, both a short dinghy ride from any anchorage in the park.

Vallée de Mai, Praslin — walk the UNESCO-listed palm forest where the coco de mer grows wild, best in the cool of early morning.

Anse Lazio, Praslin — the beach most sailors detour for: granite boulders framing white sand and clear shallows, empty before 10am.

Anse Source d'Argent, La Digue — arguably the most photographed beach in the Indian Ocean; hire a bike from the jetty rather than walk in the heat.

Curieuse Island — go ashore to see giant Aldabra tortoises roaming free near the old coco de mer plantation.

Beau Vallon, Mahé — the liveliest beach on Mahé itself, good for a last night ashore before or after the boat.

Victoria market — small, fast-moving fish and spice market in the capital, worth an early stop before provisioning.

Silhouette Island — a quieter granite anchorage for those adding a day away from the main run north.

Practical information

Currency is the Seychelles Rupee (SCR); euros and US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas but the rupee is the official currency for local transactions. Most nationalities can enter without a visa in advance — a free Tourist Visa is issued on arrival for up to 90 days, provided you carry a valid passport, return ticket, proof of accommodation and sufficient funds for your stay. The emergency number is 999. Power sockets are UK-style three-pin (Type G), 240V/50Hz — bring an adaptor if you're not already on that standard. Tipping isn't obligatory; 5-10% for good service ashore is normal and appreciated. Seychelles runs on Seychelles Time (SCT), UTC+4, with no daylight saving.

Mahé questions

Asked and answered.

What's the best time to charter a yacht in Mahé, Seychelles?
April and November give the lightest winds and the calmest sea state — the transition between the two trade-wind seasons. May to October brings steadier south-east trades (15-20 knots) that suit more experienced sailors, while November to March is warmer and wetter under the lighter north-west monsoon, with squalls that pass quickly.
Do I need a sailing licence for a bareboat charter in Seychelles?
You'll need a recognised sailing qualification (such as ICC or equivalent) plus VHF radio competency and evidence of recent offshore experience to bareboat here. Reef navigation and sparse buoyage make this a less forgiving ground than some Med destinations, so operators check credentials carefully. Without them, a skippered charter is the alternative.
How much does a yacht charter in Mahé cost?
Seychelles runs at a premium compared with the Med or Caribbean, reflecting the logistics of supplying boats in a remote island group. Pricing depends heavily on boat type, season and whether you take a skipper — get an exact quote for your dates rather than relying on a headline figure. Price on request.
Where do charters start and finish?
Charters check in and out at Eden Island Marina on Mahé, close to Victoria and around 20-30 minutes from Seychelles International Airport. Provisioning, fuel and handover all happen on site, so most guests fly in, taxi straight to the marina and are aboard within a couple of hours of landing.
Is Mahé good for a family sailing holiday?
Yes — short daily hops of two to four hours, calm inner-island anchorages and beach stops like Anse Lazio and Curieuse suit children well. A catamaran gives more deck space and shallower anchoring off beaches. A skipper takes the pressure off reef navigation, which matters more here than in familiar Med waters.
How difficult is the sailing around Mahé?
Distances are short but the navigation demands attention — coral reefs fringe most anchorages, buoyage is sparse, and charts don't always match what you see at low water. Experienced sailors handle it bareboat; anyone newer to reef pilotage is better served taking a skipper for at least the outer-island legs.
Can I fly directly into Mahé?
Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) is on Mahé itself, with direct and connecting flights via Europe, the Gulf and East Africa. There's no separate transfer island to reach — you land, clear immigration and are at Eden Island Marina within half an hour. Book early for Christmas and Easter, when both flights and boats fill.
Where do the yachts in Mahé sail from?
Boats sail Mahé all year. The fleet list above is live from our operator system, and every card names the base that boat leaves from, so it always shows what is actually available for your dates.
Bareboat or crewed in Mahé?
Both. Bareboat if someone on your crew holds a licence, crewed if you would rather a skipper did the work. Tell us your experience level and we will match you.
How do I get a quote?
Send us your dates, your group and roughly the boat you want. Same day, we reply with real options, real prices and the honest trade-offs.
