Friuli-Venezia Giulia sits where Italy runs out and Slovenia begins, and the sailing has that border-country feel — Venetian bell towers, Austro-Hungarian coffee houses, Roman ruins, all within a day's sail of each other. The Marano and Grado lagoon is shallow and sheltered, a slow, birdlife-heavy start to a week that opens out into the Gulf of Trieste. It's quieter than Croatia or Greece in peak season, and close enough to Trieste, Piran and Poreč that a week here reads as three countries rather than one coastline.

The base sits inland on the Stella river, inside the Marano and Grado lagoon — a maze of channels marked by bricole (wooden pole markers) rather than buoys, so the first hours out are slow, chart-and-eyeball work. Clear the lagoon mouth at Porto Buso and you're in the open Gulf of Trieste: Grado, Aquileia's canal port, Lignano Sabbiadoro, and Trieste itself with its grand waterfront. From there the Slovenian coast — Izola, Koper, Piran — is a short hop, and Croatian Istria (Umag, Poreč) a longer one if the week allows. Venice lies across an exposed stretch of open water to the south; most charters treat it as a bucket-list passage rather than a weekly leg.

The charter season runs April to October. Summer is the settled stretch — light morning calm, a building sea breeze most afternoons, good sailing by early afternoon. The wind to know here is the Bora: a cold, gusty northeasterly that funnels down off the Slovenian hills, strongest in autumn and winter but capable of showing up hard and fast even in the shoulder months, so check the forecast daily rather than trusting the season. Scirocco, from the southeast, brings rain and a confused sea rather than wind strength. Inside the lagoon the water is shallow and tide-sensitive — stick to marked channels; outside it, the gulf is deep and straightforward.

Every boat sailing from here is bareboat — you skipper it yourself, so a valid sailing qualification (ICC, RYA Day Skipper or equivalent) and some open-water miles behind you are expected at check-in. There's no crewed option based here at present; if you want a skipper aboard, ask us before booking and we'll tell you honestly whether that can be arranged for your dates.

Day 1: pick up in Precenicco, provision, and motor the lagoon channels out to an anchorage near Marano Lagunare — a gentle first afternoon to find your feet on the boat. Day 2: sail to Grado, moor up and spend the evening in the old town. Day 3: cross to Aquileia for the basilica and Roman port, then back out toward the lagoon mouth. Day 4: clear Porto Buso into open water and sail up to Trieste; walk Piazza Unità and Miramare. Day 5: cross the gulf to Piran or Izola if the Bora forecast is clean — otherwise stay Italian-side and explore Muggia. Day 6: sail back down the gulf, stopping at Lignano Sabbiadoro for a beach afternoon. Day 7: return through the lagoon channels to Precenicco for a morning handover.

The base at Precenicco sits inland on the Marano lagoon, reached by road rather than by sea from the airport. Trieste's airport (Ronchi dei Legionari) is the closest; Venice Marco Polo is a common alternative if you're flying low-cost. Check-in and handover happen at the marina — allow time on arrival day for the boat briefing before you head out into the lagoon channels, which take longer to navigate at low tide.
