Sail Apulia.

Most people fly over Apulia on their way to Croatia or Greece. That is the point. The heel of Italy sees a fraction of the charter traffic of the eastern Adriatic, and the coast rewards you for turning up: the Gargano promontory rising green out of the sea, old timber fishing platforms called trabucchi bolted to the rocks, whitewashed towns that still run on their own clock. We sail out of two bases — Rodi Garganico on the Gargano headland and Bari further south — and between them you get a stretch of Italy that feels closer to how the Adriatic used to be.

This is not a party-anchorage cruising ground. It is coastal Italy at a walking pace: a swim before the harbour town wakes up, a plate of orecchiette and a carafe of Primitivo on the quay, then a short hop to the next place. Right for sailors who want the food, the light and the quiet; less right for anyone chasing back-to-back beach clubs.

Two distinct grounds. From Rodi Garganico you work the Gargano coast — a limestone promontory with sea caves, arches and clear water at the eastern tip near Vieste and Peschici. The Tremiti Islands sit roughly 12 nautical miles offshore: San Domino and San Nicola, a small archipelago with pine-covered cliffs and some of the cleanest water in the Adriatic. It is an open-water crossing, so watch the forecast, but on a settled day it is the highlight of the region.

From Bari the coast runs south past Polignano a Mare, Monopoli and into the Salento. Distances between harbours are short — 10 to 25 nautical miles — so you are never committed to a long day. Anchorages are fewer and more exposed here than in Croatia; you will spend more nights on a marina pontoon or town quay than swinging on the hook. That is the trade-off for Italy proper at the end of every day.

The reliable window runs May to early October. July and August bring the settled weather and the warmest water, but also the domestic Italian holiday crowd — book harbours ahead and expect to pay peak marina rates in Ferragosto week (mid-August). We think June and September are the sweet spot: warm sea, lighter crowds, gentler prices.

Winds are moderate and thermal for much of the summer. The maestrale (north-west) is the prevailing breeze, usually building in the afternoon and easing overnight. The scirocco from the south-east brings warmth, haze and swell — it is the one to plan around, as it makes the Gargano's north-facing anchorages and the Tremiti crossing uncomfortable. Spring and autumn see more variable systems, so keep a weather margin and a backup harbour in mind. Nothing here is Aegean-meltemi ferocious, but the Adriatic can turn quickly.

There are no crewed yachts on this ground at present; if you want a skipper or hostess aboard a bareboat, ask and we will tell you honestly what we can arrange. A skippered arrangement suits first-timers to the region or anyone who would rather read the food than the pilot charts. A local skipper earns their fee here: they know which trabucco does the better fish and which town quay has water and power.

Bareboat weekly rates in Apulia sit in the mid-range for the Mediterranean — usually below the Balearics, roughly in line with Croatia's shoulder season. Expect the biggest swing between June/September and the August peak. On top of the base rate, budget for:

• Fuel — modest, given the short hops; you motor more than you sail on calm days. - Marina fees — €40–€120 a night for a 40–50ft yacht depending on town and season; Tremiti and the smart Salento harbours sit at the top end. - End cleaning, transit log and tourist tax — standard extras, itemised before you pay. - Optional skipper and provisioning — priced per charter.

Day 1 — Board at Marina di Rodi Garganico, provision, short shakedown sail, overnight in the marina.

Day 2 — Sail east along the Gargano to Peschici, a white town stacked on a cliff. Anchor for a swim below the trabucchi, berth in the small harbour.

Day 3 — Continue to Vieste at the promontory's tip. Sea caves and the Pizzomunno rock stack; a proper town for a night ashore.

Day 4 — Weather permitting, cross to the Tremiti Islands (roughly 20nm from Vieste). Anchor off San Domino, dive the clear water, walk San Nicola's abbey.

Day 5 — Second night at the Tremiti or, if the scirocco threatens, run back to the mainland early and shelter at Rodi.

Day 6 — Coast-hop west toward Peschici or a quiet cala, a slower day built around lunch and a long swim.

Day 7 — Return leg to Rodi Garganico, top up fuel and water, dinner ashore.

Day 8 — Disembark after breakfast. Shorten or reverse this from Bari for the southern Salento run.

For the Gargano base, Bari (BRI) and Foggia are the nearest airports; Bari is the better-served, about a 2-hour drive to Rodi Garganico. For the Bari base you are 20 minutes from the airport. Brindisi (BDS) works for the deep Salento. Trains reach Bari from across Italy; the Gargano's last leg is easiest by hire car, and having a car for changeover-day provisioning is worth it either way. Bring your original ICC/skipper qualification and passports — Italian bareboat paperwork is checked at handover, so have it ready.
