The north Aegean is the part of Greece most charterers skip, which is exactly the point. Sailing out of Avdira you get open water, two proper island targets, and anchorages where you are more likely to share the bay with fishing boats than with a flotilla. The mainland coast here is low and green in spring, dry and gold by August, backed by tobacco country and the Nestos delta. This is not the Cyclades. Nobody is going to hand you a postcard skyline. What you get instead is space, honest tavernas that have not learned to price for yachts, and two islands — Thasos and Samothraki — that between them cover almost everything you want from a week: sheltered swimming, one serious mountain, and enough distance to feel like sailing rather than day-hopping.

Avdira sits roughly midway along the Thracian coast, which makes it a sensible base for two directions. South-west lies Thasos, about 20 to 25 nautical miles off, a near-circular island with anchorages on most sides so you can always find a lee. Limenas on the north coast is the main port; Limenaria and the small bays down the west and south give you options depending on wind. Further out — 30-plus miles east-north-east — sits Samothraki, mountainous, exposed, and worth the passage if the forecast is kind. Between them the mainland offers Keramoti and the Nestos river mouth as fair-weather stops. Marinas are thin on the ground out here. Expect town quays, fishing harbours and anchoring rather than fully serviced berths, which is part of the trade you make for the quiet.

The practical window is May through early October. The dominant summer wind is the northerly Etesian — the same system Greeks call the meltemi further south, but generally softer and less relentless up here in the north Aegean. Reckon on force 3 to 5 from the north on a typical July or August afternoon, building through the day and dropping overnight. It gives you good reaching in the channels but makes the Samothraki crossing a decision rather than a formality; that island is exposed and its harbour can be uncomfortable in a strong northerly. May, June and September are the kinder months — warm water, lighter and more variable winds, thinner crowds. July and August bring the steadiest wind and the most heat. Early and late season can throw the occasional southerly and a wet front; check the forecast before committing to an open crossing.

It is a good ground for a competent bareboat crew because the distances are real without being punishing and the navigation is straightforward: deep water, few hazards, harbours you can see from a way off. There is no crewed option based here at present, so if you want full crew this is not the base for that trip.

Week-long bareboat prices move with boat size, age and season, so we quote per enquiry rather than pin a figure that goes stale. As a rough shape: a mid-size monohull in the shoulder season sits at the lower end, a larger or newer boat in peak August at the upper. On top of the charter fee, budget for fuel (short hops here keep this modest), an end-of-charter clean, and a refundable security deposit. Town-quay mooring on the mainland and islands is cheap or free compared with serviced marinas further south; you will spend more on tavernas than on berths. Day 1 — Board at Avdira in the afternoon, provision, sleep on the quay. Day 2 — Cross to Thasos, aiming for Limenas or a bay on the north coast; 20-odd miles, a fair reach in a northerly. Swim, walk the old harbour. Day 3 — Work down Thasos's west side to Limenaria or Aliki, picking anchorages by the wind. Aliki's twin coves and ruined marble quarry are worth the stop. Day 4 — If the forecast holds, make the longer passage to Samothraki; if not, stay on Thasos and enjoy it. Day 5 — Samothraki: the harbour, the waterfalls inland, the mountain over your shoulder. Leave early if a northerly is building. Day 6 — Return leg towards the mainland, stopping at Keramoti or the Nestos mouth for a quiet last night at anchor. Day 7 — Short hop back to Avdira, clean-up, farewell dinner ashore. Reverse or shorten it freely — the point of bareboat is that the week is yours.

The nearest airports are Kavala (Alexandroupoli is the other option further east). Kavala sits a straightforward drive from Avdira — allow under an hour by taxi or hire car. Connections are mostly domestic via Athens or Thessaloniki, with some seasonal international flights; check schedules early because they thin out of season.
