Sail Grenada.

Grenada sits at the southern end of the Windward Islands, below the latitude where hurricanes usually track, which is why boats stay based here through the calendar rather than moving north and south with the seasons. The island is steep and green — nutmeg and cocoa on the hillsides, volcanic-sand beaches at the water. Head north from the capital and the character changes fast: Carriacou, Petite Martinique and the Tobago Cays open up as a string of smaller, quieter islands within a few days' sailing. It suits sailors who want one solid base, honest trade-wind conditions, and the option to choose between a lively main island and near-empty anchorages further out.

Port Louis Marina, inside the lagoon at St George's, is the working base — full-service, sheltered, a short walk into town for provisioning. From there the standard run goes north along Grenada's leeward coast to Halifax Harbour and Grand Mal, across to Carriacou's Tyrrel Bay and Sandy Island, and on to the Tobago Cays in the Grenadines if the week allows it. South and east of the marina, Hog Island and Clarkes Court Bay give sheltered, shallow water for a first or last night before or after the crossing north. Most legs are three to five hours under sail.

The north-east trades blow for most of the year, typically 12-20 knots, stronger where they funnel between islands. December to May is the dry season — steadier wind, less rain, the busier months on the water. June to November is warmer and wetter, with the odd squall, but Grenada's position south of 12°N keeps it largely clear of the hurricane track that affects islands further north. That's the reason boats are based here year-round rather than laid up for part of it.

Boats here go out bareboat: you or a named member of your crew skippers, provisions and plans the route, after a full handover and chart briefing at Port Louis Marina. You'll need a recognised sailing qualification, or equivalent demonstrable experience, to take a boat out. Weekly bareboat rates vary by boat size and by season, with December to April running higher than the quieter summer months. On top of the base rate, budget for fuel, mooring or marina fees along the route, provisioning, and a refundable security deposit. Day 1: check out at Port Louis Marina, short sail south to Hog Island or Prickly Bay for the first night. Day 2: round to Clarkes Court Bay, quiet anchorage, dinghy ashore. Day 3: north along the leeward coast to Halifax Harbour or Grand Mal. Day 4: cross to Carriacou, clear in at Tyrrel Bay. Day 5: Sandy Island — snorkel and a beach lunch. Day 6: Tobago Cays if the weather and week allow, otherwise start the return south. Day 7: stop at Moliniere Bay for the sculpture park on the way back into Port Louis Marina.

Maurice Bishop International Airport (GND), near True Blue, is around twenty minutes by taxi to Port Louis Marina in St George's. Arrive with a valid passport and an onward or return ticket. Check-in and handover happen at the marina; plan to land the day before you want to sail so the briefing and provisioning aren't rushed.
