Why Sail the Bahamas
The Abacos sit behind a barrier reef, so most of the sailing here happens on flat, skinny water — three to six metres over sand and turtle grass, visibility you could read a chart through. Hops between anchorages are short, an hour or two, which suits crews who want time at anchor over time at the helm. It's a different proposition to the open swell of the Windwards: gentler, shallower, forgiving of a slow tack or a late reef. New Providence adds a shorter season of day-sailing and short hops around Nassau harbour and Paradise Island, useful if the Abacos aren't on your route.
02
The Sailing Grounds
Abaco charters run out of Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco, with the Sea of Abaco as the main cruising ground — a strip of protected water running north from Marsh Harbour past Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, and up to Green Turtle Cay and the quieter anchorages at Manjack and Powell Cay. South of Marsh Harbour, Little Harbour marks the edge of the barrier reef and open water beyond. New Providence sailing centres on Nassau — Montagu Bay for a protected overnight, short crossings to Paradise Island, day trips toward the Exuma approach for boats with more range.
03
Season and Winds
Easterly trade winds hold at 10-18 knots most of the year, which is what makes the Abacos sailable for beginners and comfortable for families. Winter (December-February) brings periodic cold fronts off the US mainland — locally "a norther" — with a day or two of stronger northerly wind and squally rain before it clears. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking August to October; charters through that window are routine but it's worth tracking the forecast and booking flexible dates. Outside of fronts and storm season, conditions are steady and easy to read.
04
Charter Types and Costs
Both bareboat and skippered charters are available, on monohulls and catamarans. Bareboat requires a recognised sailing qualification (an ICC or equivalent) or a demonstrated logbook — the Abacos' shallow, well-marked water is genuinely approachable for a competent but not expert crew. Skippered charters suit first-time visitors or anyone who'd rather not worry about the reef passes. Costs vary widely by boat size, season, and whether you provision aboard or eat ashore each night; broadly, a week's bareboat monohull charter in the Abacos runs somewhere in the €3,000-€6,000 range in low season, more for larger boats, catamarans, or peak weeks. Ask us on WhatsApp for the current list — price on request for specific dates and boats.

A Week Aboard
A typical Abaco loop starts and ends in Marsh Harbour. Day one: provision, check out, short sail to Hope Town for the night. Day two: climb the lighthouse, snorkel Elbow Reef, sail to Man-O-War Cay. Day three: Man-O-War to Great Guana Cay, anchor off Nipper's for the afternoon. Day four: Guana Cay north to Green Turtle Cay, walk New Plymouth in the evening. Day five: quieter anchorages at Manjack or Powell Cay, snorkelling and no schedule. Day six: sail south to Little Harbour for Pete's Pub. Day seven: return to Marsh Harbour, clean up, handover. The whole loop covers modest distances — nowhere is more than a few hours' sail from the next stop.

Getting There
Marsh Harbour (MHH) and Treasure Cay (TCB) both have direct flights from South Florida — Fort Lauderdale and Miami mainly — plus connections via Nassau. Nassau (NAS) is the better-connected airport for New Providence charters, with direct flights from the US, Canada, and the UK. Marina check-in for Abaco charters is usually in Marsh Harbour; confirm your check-in time and bring passports for the boat's crew list, which the base needs before handover.
