Why Sail the Bahamas

The Abacos sit behind a barrier reef, so most of the sailing here happens on flat, skinny water — three to six metres over sand and turtle grass, visibility you could read a chart through. Hops between anchorages are short, an hour or two, which suits crews who want time at anchor over time at the helm. It's a different proposition to the open swell of the Windwards: gentler, shallower, forgiving of a slow tack or a late reef. New Providence adds a shorter season of day-sailing and short hops around Nassau harbour and Paradise Island, useful if the Abacos aren't on your route.

Bahamas — Yacht Charter

Practical information

Currency: Bahamian dollar, pegged 1:1 to the US dollar. US dollars are accepted everywhere and change is often given in either.

Visa: EU, UK, US, and Canadian passport holders can generally enter visa-free for short stays — check current requirements before you travel, as rules vary by nationality and length of stay.

Emergency number: 911.

Plug/socket: Type A/B, 120V, 60Hz — the same as the US, so US-plug devices work without an adaptor.

Tipping: 15% is standard at restaurants and often added automatically to the bill; a crew tip of 10-15% of the charter fee is customary for skippered trips.

Time zone: Eastern Time (EST/EDT).

Bahamas questions

Asked and answered.

How much does a yacht charter in the Bahamas cost?
It depends on boat size, season, and whether you go bareboat or skippered. As a rough guide, a week's bareboat monohull in the Abacos runs in the low thousands of euros in quieter months and climbs for catamarans or peak weeks. Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and group size for the current price list — we'd rather give you an accurate figure than a guess.
Do I need a sailing licence to bareboat charter in the Abacos?
Yes — bases require a recognised qualification such as an ICC, or a logbook showing equivalent experience, before releasing a bareboat. The Sea of Abaco is shallow and well-marked, genuinely approachable for a competent crew, but you still need to show you can handle a boat and read a chart. If you'd rather not worry about it, book skippered instead.
What's the best time of year to sail the Bahamas?
Winter through spring (roughly December to May) gives the most settled trade winds, though December-February can bring the odd cold front with a day of stronger northerly wind. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking August-October; charters still go out through that window but it's worth booking flexible dates and watching the forecast.
Where should I start a Bahamas sailing itinerary?
Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco is the usual base — it puts the whole Sea of Abaco within a day's sail: Hope Town, Man-O-War Cay, Great Guana Cay, and Green Turtle Cay to the north, Little Harbour to the south. New Providence, based around Nassau, works better if you want shorter hops and easy access to Paradise Island.
Is the Bahamas a good charter destination for families?
Yes — the Abacos are one of the more forgiving cruising grounds around: short hops, shallow protected water, and beach anchorages with a sandbar or reef to swim from most days. Nipper's and Baker's Bay both give kids somewhere to run around ashore. The main planning point is flight connections, since most routes go via South Florida or Nassau.
Is hurricane season a concern for Bahamas charters?
It's worth knowing about rather than avoiding entirely. The season runs June to November and peaks August-October; outside of an actual storm track, conditions are normal trade-wind sailing. Book with flexible dates if you're chartering in that window, keep an eye on the forecast in the week before you fly, and talk to us if a system develops near your dates.
Can I dive or snorkel from a charter yacht in the Abacos?
Yes — Elbow Reef off Hope Town is an easy swim from the mooring field, and most of the anchorages north and south have coral heads or a sandbar within dinghy range. It's snorkelling rather than deep diving territory for the most part: clear, shallow water over reef and grass, good for a first snorkel of a trip as much as an experienced one.
Where can I sail in Bahamas?
We charter across Abaco Islands and New Providence. Each area has its own page with the live fleet for your dates.
What kind of yachts are available in Bahamas?
Bareboat if someone on your crew holds a licence, crewed if you would rather a skipper did the work. The grid above is live from our operator system and always shows what is actually free.
